Here’s the latest update on the war of words between supporters and opponents on the controversial Thirty Meter Telescope project on the Mauna Kea Summit. The state Land Board will meet in Honolulu on Friday to review the proposed regulations. The Department of Land and Natural Resources drafted new “emergency rules” that would “protect against imminent peril to public safety and natural resources.” If the new rules are approved, the regulations would ban certain activities, including camping within 1 mile of the Mauna Kea Observatory Access Road.” Protesters claim they are demonstrating and not camping on the access road.
